I’m very excited to participate in Flashforward2007 Boston.
My presentation, imaginatively called Papervision3D is geared toward anyone involved in the process of creating web content, who wants to take their work to a whole new dimension of graphics realism.
It will cover the work of the project’s development team, our current direction and goals, but it’s main focus will be the integration of the third dimension into today’s websites.
Design implications will be discussed as well as the different approaches considered and the production workflow of a selection of examples from my commercial work.
I’m also looking forward to the 17th Flashforward Film Festival, where Papervision3D has been chosen as a finalist in the 3D category and I’m a member of the jury for Experience & Navigation.

I’ve just set up the new domain for all Papervision3D stuff.
There’s now a new blog and a new site (well, at the moment it’s just a teaser).
blog.Papervision3D.org is the official source for news, information and resources related to the Papervision3D open source project. From now on, all the announcements will happen there. It’s also the place to discuss all its related 3D issues, including the highly anticipated release date.
Papervision3D.org will be the official site of the project. The future home of all downloads, demos, examples and tutorials. I’ve uploaded a little teaser that shows off a couple of 3D effects I’ve been playing with.
Development issues and code contributions will remain in osflash.org/papervision3D, which also hosts our email list.
This blog will still be maintained of course, covering my personal and commercial work, the experiments on my lab and general Flash and ActionScript subjects.

I’m very happy to announce that Papervision3D is now part of the OSFlash family.
Many thanks to John Grden and Aral Balkan for making this possible.
OSFlash provides source code hosting and project management tools for the open source Flash community. If you haven’t done it already, take a look at the list of hosted projects. There’s an awful lot of very interesting stuff.
OSFlash hosts our new official Email List. If you would like to receive updates via e-mail, you can subscribe to it.
BTW, the 3D suffix will differentiate the new open source version of Papervision from previous unreleased versions.
More news to come very soon, including the much anticipated public beta release date.

To celebrate the upcoming open source release of Papervision, here’s a demo of a 3D Rhino.
The scene contains 514 vertices and 1005 polys imported from 3ds Max. Instead of being generated by code, the mesh data, including vertices, faces and UV mapping, is parsed from an external ASE file.
Texture size is quite generous, the rhino’s is 1647 x 858 and the floor is 990 x 393. The shadow is precalculated by rendering with a gradient texture (a simple way to simulate a Z-buffer) and applying a blur BitmapFilter afterwards.
Camera position and target can be manually adjusted, and as usual, pressing Shift reveals the triangles.

I’m very happy to announce that the next version of Papervision is going to be released as open source.
Papervision is a high performance 3D engine for Flash 8, whose latest version powered Robbie’s Rudebox site and the much popular Room and Box demos.
It’s been heavily optimized since then, and it’s currently being rewritten for clarity and ease of use. It shouldn’t be long before it’s available for beta testing, but don’t hold your breath because I’m also very occupied at Hi-ReS!
I’ll post more details soon, including licence type, list of features and some benchmarks.
In the meantime, here’s a little demo to wet your appetite.
